UNHCR Refugee Status Determination

Part of UNHCR’s mandate is doing refugee status determination (RSD), and it registered 203,200 individual asylum applications in 2013¹.  These ever increasing numbers of asylum applications coupled with limited staffing capacity at UNHCR operations have led to huge backlogs on applications.  In order to ensure that RSD procedures as applied by UNHCR are appropriate, transparent, and in line with internationally accepted legal standards, the UNHCR RSD Working Group monitors UNHCR and develops methods to address any gaps.
